Ngoma Kurira – Meaning & Name Origin

"Ngoma Kurira" means "the drum sounds" or "where the drum beats" in Shona. The name is inspired by the echoes that bounce off the towering rock faces of this sacred mountain. In the past, traditional drumming and music during spiritual ceremonies would echo across the granite, creating an intense, vibrating sound that could be heard from far away — hence the name.

Ngoma Kurira is located in Chinamora Communal Lands, just northeast of Harare, Zimbabwe, near Domboshava. It’s part of the broader Chinamora hills, surrounded by valleys, indigenous trees, sacred forests, and balancing rocks. The area is easily accessible from Harare, making it a popular hiking and cultural heritage site.

The mountain itself rises with exposed granite outcrops, similar to those found at Domboshava, and features caves, natural water reservoirs (dziva), and sacred shrines used by traditional spiritual leaders.
